7 Misconceptions About Working With a Financial Advisor
When you think about your financial advisor, what comes to mind?
A numbers person in a suit? A market expert? Someone who makes you build a budget?
As an advisor, I often hear how clients perceive us… and honestly, it’s not always the most accurate. Sometimes these perceptions get in the way of honest conversations, trust, or taking action. So, let’s bust a few of the myths and common misconceptions that clients believe about their financial advisor.
“My Advisor is Judging Me.”
The truth: We’re not. We’re here to help, not grade you on where your finances are.
You are not the only person who has started saving later in life, spent too much, didn’t open the 401(k), or avoided an uncomfortable financial conversation that they should probably have had. We’ve seen it before — and we’re not keeping score. Our job is to meet you where you are and help you move forward. Not to make you feel bad about the past.
“They’re Only Focused on My Investments.”
The truth: Investments are just one piece of the puzzle.
A good advisor looks beyond the portfolio. Retirement planning, tax strategy, estate planning, risk management, education funding, and even life coaching… all of that is part of the picture (and a shameless plug that my firm, Hixon Zuercher Capital Management, does all of these things). If you think your advisor just wants to talk about investments, you might be missing the bigger value they bring (or you need a new advisor).
“They Make Money Whether I Do Something or Not.”
The truth: Many advisors are just as invested in your success as you are.
While compensation models can be different depending on the firm, most advisors succeed by helping their clients succeed. If your advisor is fee-based or charges a percentage of your assets like my firm does, our income is directly tied to the growth and protection of your wealth. Even more importantly, good advisors deeply care about the outcome of your story beyond the money. My greatest joy comes from seeing my clients thrive.
“They Know Everything About Money.”
The truth: We don’t know everything, but we know exactly how to find the answers.
Even the most experienced advisor isn’t an expert in every detail of the tax code, every insurance policy, or every new financial product. But we do know how to ask the right questions, bring in specialists when needed, and help you make informed decisions. It’s okay, and even powerful, when we say, “Let me look into that and get back to you.” That just means that your advisor cares to get you the most accurate information to make the best decision.
“They’re Too Busy for My Silly Questions.”
The truth: There are NO questions that are too silly or too small when it comes to your financial life.
If something’s on your mind, please ask it! Whether it’s about refinancing your mortgage, changing your withholdings, helping a parent, or paying off a credit card, it matters. Great advisors want to be your first call. If we think the question is small and easy then we should have a quick answer for you anyways, so we really don’t mind!
“I Need To Have It All Together When I Meet With Them.”
The truth: You don’t need to be organized, wealthy, or perfect to start.
I’m not expecting you to arrive with color-coded files, a detailed net worth statement, or perfect financial habits. In fact, part of my job is helping you get organized. If you’ve even avoided a meeting because you’re embarrassed or unsure where to start, you’re likely exactly the person who needs that meeting the most. Maybe this is your sign to make that first call.
“They’ll Just Tell Me What to Do And I Have No Say.”
The truth: The best financial advice is a conversation, not a simple command.
We’re not here to bark orders. I mean that. I want to understand you… your values, fears, and dreams. My job as an advisor is to help you explore your options, understand the implications, and feel confident in your decisions. The best outcomes happen when my clients feel heard, not herded.

Please remember, you financial advisors are just normal people like you.
Similar to you, we have families, stresses, goals, and worries of our own. Most of us got into this profession because we genuinely want to help others live better lives.
If you have a question, a goal, a regret that you’ve been holding back because you think we won’t care or its not relevant, please share it!
You might find that we have a lot of understanding and empathy because we are going through many of the same things are clients are. We are here to help if you let us!
